From A Distance is a compilation of watercolors by Joseph Townsend from a twenty-five-year period. Most of the paintings in this book depict homes and businesses in his hometown of Winona and of Hattiesburg, where Joe and his wife, Marsha, reside. There are also paintings of rural settings, two of Cafe du Monde, a still life, a wildlife scene, and a magnolia blossom. Two of Joe's poems are also presentedJoe's paintings are mostly in the homes of friends and relatives, but they can also be found in local museums, public libraries, local offices, and businesses. The book includes a prologue that provides an overview of how his "kitchen table" watercolor hobby evolved. Joe also explains the techniques he uses and why he seldom includes people in his paintings. The color plates are followed by an extensive "Notes" section that offers personal recollections from Joe and his friends. Read more
