Pope Pius XI was the head of the Catholic Church from 1922 to 1939 and the first sovereign of Vatican City from its creation in 1929.
The coin's reverse side displays the papal tiara above the crossed keys of Saint Peter, which are the symbols of the papacy.
The inscription "PIVS XI PONT MAX" refers to Pope Pius XI, Pontifex Maximus (Supreme Pontiff).
The date "1937" is visible at the bottom of the shield. The Roman numeral date "AN. XVI" (Year 16) is also visible on the right side, indicating the 16th year of his pontificate.
The coin is composed of nickel and was minted at the Italian State Mint in Rome, as Vatican City coins are legal tender in Italy.
